Matthew Featherstone’s early studies began in France, where he gained his ‘premier prix’ for flute at the Orléans Conservatoire in 2004. Returning to the UK, he pursued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Philippa Davies, Sarah Newbold and Ian Clarke.
Appointed Principal flute of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in 2012, Matthew has appeared as Guest Principal flute with Britten Sinfonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, RTE Concert Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. As a solo artist, Matthew has enjoyed recital work, as well as concerto appearances with Southbank Sinfonia and with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Matthew is a keen chamber musician regularly performing with ‘Trio Anima’, his flute, harp and viola trio. His work as a beatboxer, session singer and songwriter make him a versatile musician.
Matthew was awarded the Royal Overseas League Wind Prize in February 2012.
