Working in the UK
It’s important to understand and comply with your immigration rights and restrictions if you want to work during your studies in the UK.
National Insurance number
To legally work in the UK as an international student, you’ll need to apply for a National Insurance (NI) number. This is essential for tax and social security purposes. The application can be done online, and you’ll need to provide proof of identity.
Once you have your NI number, you can work within the restrictions of your visa. Always be mindful of the limits on work hours and ensure that employment doesn’t impact your studies.
For more information on how to apply, check the official UK government website.
Know your visa restrictions
Always check your visa information for specific restrictions on what you’re allowed to do during and outside of term time. Understanding your rights and limitations is crucial to ensure compliance with UK immigration rules.
Students who are allowed to work must not:
- Be self-employed or engage in business activity, except where they are awaiting a decision on an application for permission to stay as a start-up migrant which is supported by an endorsement from a qualifying higher education provider (HEP) with a track record of compliance
- Take employment as an entertainer or as a professional sportsperson, including a sports coach
- Fill a full-time permanent vacancy other than a recognised foundation programme and all other requirements are met or where they are filling a post as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer.
For more detailed guidance on working while studying, the UK Council for International Students Affairs (UKCISA) has a comprehensive guide.
