Biography

Welsh pianist and composer Huw Warren has an international reputation for innovative and eclectic music making. His playing and compositions have featured on major stages worldwide and as well as being frequently broadcast. Huw has appeared on over 50 recordings, including a set of highly individual albums under his own name. His approach to jazz education centres around the broadest possible definition of genre, and a focus on developing the individual voice both in improvising and composition.

Expertise

Huw is a recording artist for prestigious European labels ECM and CAM Jazz, as well as having ongoing creative collaborations with singers June Tabor, Maria Pia de Vito and saxophonists Iain Ballamy and Mark Lockheart. Co-founder of influential band Perfect Houseplants in the 1990’s, Huw was part of a group of UK jazz musicians seeking new sounds and approaches from diverse influences. Brazilian music has been an important part of his musical life, with extensive recordings of the music of Hermeto Pascoal and recent collaborations with Jovino Santos Neto, Adriano Adewale, Carlos Malta; and a chance in 2017 to record with Maria Pia de Vito, Roberto Taufic and Brazilian legend Chico Buarque. Huw directs the RWCMD Brazilian Ensemble.

Notable Achievements

Awarded the BBC Jazz award for Innovation, and the Arts Council Wales’ Creative Wales Award, Huw has written for many ensembles including orchestras, choirs, big bands, brass bands and the ABRSM Jazz exams. Huw is also an adjudicator for the BBC Young Jazz Musician competition and Head of Jazz Ensembles at Cardiff University.
