Our response to the proposed closure of Cardiff University's School of Music

We’re deeply saddened by the proposed closure of Cardiff University's School of Music and recognise the impact on students and staff and the uncertainty they now face. We have huge respect for the Music Department and its many exceptional alumni who have contributed so much to the cultural life of Wales and beyond.

Nobody wants to be in this position. These are incredibly challenging times for HE in the UK, and we are all having to make impossibly difficult decisions, including Cardiff University.

These proposals present another significant blow for the arts and culture in Wales which are already under such immense strain. Wales has a remarkable artistic legacy, with a tradition of producing outstanding artists who make an impact both locally and globally. That legacy is now at risk.

At RWCMD, we believe to our core in the power of the arts to transform lives. We remain committed to providing world-class professional training, nurturing the next generation of artists, and offering a rich programme of performances and participation opportunities—ensuring that people across Wales continue to engage with the arts.

We also recognise that this situation has a direct impact on some of our own community, as a number of RWCMD staff also teach at Cardiff University and now face uncertainty over their roles. We stand ready to work collaboratively to support the arts and to find the best ways forward for all those affected.
