Banking and mobile
You can open a UK bank account once you’re enrolled on your course. You may also need a UK mobile number to access certain services.
How do I open a bank account?
It can take a few weeks for your account to be opened, so you should make sure you have access to British currency for any initial expenses until your bank account is ready.
To open a UK bank account as an international student, you need to be enrolled, and you’ll need to be able to open the account in person and provide your:
- Passport
- Proof of immigration status (such as your visa share code)
- RWCMD Student Confirmation letter. You will need this letter to open a UK bank account. To download it, follow the instructions on the College intranet (the Hub).
Some banks may require additional information, so always check with your chosen bank.

Getting a UK phone number
If you’re moving to the UK for the first time, you may need a UK mobile number for everyday services, like registering with a GP, engaging with NHS services and online shopping. Some banks may ask for a UK number as part of opening a bank account.
Check for international roaming charges if you plan to use your existing SIM card temporarily.
Dual SIM
A dual SIM phone lets you use a UK SIM alongside your home number.
Getting a UK SIM
Certain providers, like GiffGaff, deliver prepaid SIM cards internationally. SIM cards are also available at supermarkets and mobile phone shops upon arrival. We don’t endorse specific providers, so select what works best for you.
Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) SIM cards
PAYG options let you top up for calls, texts and data or choose flexible monthly plans. You can compare deals on sites like MoneySavingExpert.
eSIMs (digital SIMs)
An eSIM is a digital version of a physical SIM card. Check with your mobile provider to see if they offer eSIM plans. eSIMs are supported by many newer devices and can be set up through a QR code or app from your provider.
Free Wi-Fi
Save on data by using free public Wi-Fi, widely available in many UK locations.
