Budgeting tips for students

We want your time at RWCMD to be enjoyable and stress-free, so here are some practical budgeting tips to help you make the most of your money.

Plan ahead

Remember, your student loan needs to last through the term and holidays. Avoid overspending early on by prioritising essentials like rent, food and travel.

  • Draft a budget before term starts, outlining income and expenses.

Day-to-day money-saving tips

  • Cook at home instead of eating out and shop around for deals. Use supermarket loyalty cards and buy in bulk for essentials.
  • Wait until term begins before buying books or equipment – borrow, share or buy second-hand.
  • Sign up for platforms like NUS TOTUM, Student Beans, UNiDAYS and Groupon to save on eating out, shopping and entertainment.
  • Use public transport, walk, cycle or invest in a 16-25 Railcard or Young Persons Coach Card for discounts on travel.

Watch your spending habits

  • Pay bills on time to prevent additional charges.
  • Use credit cards wisely to avoid long-term debt.
  • Consider a NUS TOTUM card for student discounts.

Get support for financial wellbeing

An advisor from the University of South Wales visits our campus regularly. To book an appointment, email student.services@rwcmd.ac.uk.

They will be able to offer advice on the following:

  • Cost of living
  • Student finance
  • Scholarships and bursaries

By following these tips, you can make your money last while still enjoying your time at RWCMD.
