Why did you choose to study the MMus course at RWCMD?

After spending some time out of education I felt ready to push both myself and my playing. Having done my undergraduate studies at a university, going to conservatoire for a Masters felt a little intimidating but RWCMD made me feel valued and supported throughout the application process.

How did you tailor your experience to best fit your future plans?

I wanted as many doors as possible open to me after graduating so tried to say ‘yes’ to as many things as possible! I have always been interested in performing contemporary and experimental music, and enjoy finding ways to creatively push myself as a violinist. In my first year I chose the 'Contemporary Performance' option as part of my Principal Study and performed Steve Reich’s Violin Phase with backing tracks I had recorded in the college’s studio. This experience was a fantastic opportunity to work in a recording studio and perform with pre-recorded tracks, all within a supportive environment with expert guidance.

Did you have any notable moments during your time on the course?

I was particularly proud of leading the ensemble for the Summer Opera production of Die Fledermaus under the direction of Alice Farnham at the end of my first year at RWCMD. As it was my first time in a leadership role, it felt like a significant step for me. I felt very supported by my peers and all the staff involved in the project, which transformed what initially seemed daunting into a brilliant and memorable experience.

How did the course help you in your career path, post-graduation?

Studying at RWCMD allowed me the time and opportunities to develop my skills as an instrumentalist and gave me a breadth of experience in solo and ensemble performance. The course enabled me to build connections that have led to professional work opportunities since graduating. Most importantly, my time at RWCMD significantly boosted my confidence in my abilities as a musician and professional, and empowered me to be creative in the types of work I pursue.

Who would you recommend this course to?

I would recommend this course to anyone looking for a supportive environment to develop their practice and prepare for a career in the industry.
