Where and what did you do before beginning the MMus course?
I studied at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, the Hammond School and Chetham’s School of Music before attending the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama for both my undergraduate and postgraduate degree in Vocal and Opera studies.
Why did you choose to study the MMus course at RWCMD?
I chose to pursue my Masters at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama because it offered the freedom to select my own modules and tailor the course to best suit my career goals. In my opinion, it is one of the best programmes in the country. Additionally, Cardiff is a beautiful city to live in, and the people, both within the College and beyond, are so friendly and welcoming!
How did you tailor your experience to best fit your career aspirations/goals/future plans?
In the first year of my Master’s, I discussed my interest in a career in Arts Management with my tutors. They helped me select modules that would best support this goal and provided valuable contacts within the industry to start building my network. In my second year, I took the Career Management course led by Karen Pimbley, where I learned about funding, different careers in the arts sector, and current industry challenges.
Did you have any notable moments during your time on the course?
I have many memorable highlights from my time at RWCMD. Two experiences that particularly stand out are my internship with the Forget Me Not Chorus as part of my Outreach Skills module, which significantly enhanced my leadership skills and confidence, and the development of my own small music agency in my second year. This venture was crucial in honing my skills and preparing me for a career in the industry. Through extensive networking, I had the opportunity to provide music entertainment for the French Rugby team during the International games in Cardiff.
How did the course help you in your career path, post-graduation?
I count myself as incredibly lucky to have gained a traineeship position immediately after graduating at Intermusica Artists' Management in London. Just three months into the role, my position was made permanent, and I am now working as an Assistant Artist Manager. I am absolutely loving my work in artist management, collaborating closely with internationally renowned artists and opera and concert promoters worldwide to ensure that engagements run as smoothly as possible.
Who would you recommend this course to?
I would recommend this course to someone who is looking to not only develop their skills as a performer, but as an all-round industry professional who wants to develop their outreach skills, career management skills and overall knowledge of the industry.
