Why did you choose to study the MMus course at RWCMD?

I chose to continue my studies at RWCMD to gain more experience working with singers, particularly to deepen my understanding of opera and the role of a répétiteur.

How did you tailor your experience to best fit your career aspirations?

With the support of Zoe Smith, Head of Postgraduate Programmes, I was able to tailor the course to suit my specific interests. Instead of following the collaborative piano route, I focused solely on vocal accompaniment and opera. The Professional Project module gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in the process of staging an opera, from the early stages to performing on piano and celeste in performance..

Throughout the project, I played for numerous vocal lessons, which helped me understand the singer’s process while receiving valuable feedback on my vocal coaching. I also accompanied language classes and learned about vocal technique, all while working on improving my sight-reading skills. This experience allowed me to develop my ability to play orchestral reductions, making decisions on what to omit or include to create the full effect of an orchestra at the piano.

Did you have any notable performances during your time on the course?

I really enjoyed working on a student led project that gave me the opportunity to perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with orchestra. That is definitely a highlight from my time at RWCMD.

How did the course help you in your career path, post-graduation?

The course gave me the flexibility I needed to balance work and study, allowing me to build strong professional relationships with teachers—many of whom I now work alongside! Without those two extra years of study, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It provided a safe space to experiment and push myself, which meant that when I graduated, I was well-prepared to find work. Since then, I’ve started teaching piano at The King’s School in Gloucester and work as a choir leader and accompanist across South Wales.

Who would you recommend this course to?

Everyone! You can focus your studies as narrow or broadly as you like on a subject of your choosing, that’s the beauty of the course. Zoe is a fantastic mentor, and works with each student on a personal basis to make sure they have the best time at RWCMD.
