MMus Orchestral Performance (Strings)

Year of graduation:

Where did you do before beginning the MMus course?

Before studying at RWCMD, I graduated from the Royal College of Music in London with a BMus (Hons) degree in Violin Performance

Why did you choose to study the MMus course at RWCMD?

I chose to study the MMus course at RWCMD because its orchestral performance pathway promised a wealth of professional orchestral experiences. The course offered mentorship from experts in the field, and provided me with valuable tuition and industry insights.

With the guidance of these tutors I was able to develop my skills and knowledge further, gaining the confidence and experience needed for a successful orchestral career.

How did you tailor your experience to best fit your career goals?

The course leaders at RWCMD are accommodating and flexible, allowing students to prioritise professional gigs and orchestral performances while still ensuring ample time for learning at the College. Additionally, playing in a student-led quartet helped me build confidence and apply my knowledge as a key member of a team.

Did you have any notable placements during your time on the course?

Very soon after beginning the course I had my first placements with the BBC NOW and WNO. These were fantastic experiences which taught me so much about what it’s like to work in a professional orchestra.

Following my first placement patch with BBC NOW I was invited to stay on and perform in the subsequent concerts as a freelance extra player. From then on I began regularly freelancing with the orchestra, and it wasn’t long until I was also freelancing with the WNO.

How did the course help you in your career path post-graduation?

Upon finishing the course at the RWCMD, I felt well-prepared to enter the professional world as a freelance violinist. By the time I graduated, I had nearly a full freelance schedule and felt confident in my abilities, thanks to the valuable experience gained during the course

The training not only improved my musical skills but also taught me how to manage my time effectively with a busy schedule. This skill has been crucial in maintaining a full-time freelance career with orchestras including the BBCNOW, WNO, and CBSO. I am extremely grateful to the RWCMD staff for their support and guidance, which directly contributed to my achievements in the music industry.

Who would you recommend this course to?

I would recommend this course to anyone with a passion for orchestral playing and a dream of becoming a professional orchestral musician. The College has so much to offer including a flexible and relaxed learning environment, a beautiful campus location, and world-class instrumental professors, many of whom come from the BBC NOW and WNO orchestras.

The RWCMD staff were extremely supportive and flexible, guiding and allowing me to springboard directly into the professional industry.
