Sean Crowley has worked across the design spectrum in film, opera, theatre and television, designing over 200 productions for companies across Wales, the UK and Europe during a 35-year career. Sean became Head of Design at RWCMD in 1999 and then also the Director of Drama in 2011.
Sean was Chair of the Society of British Theatre Designers between 2011 and 2019 and Chair of the Association of Theatre Design Courses UK between 2001 to 2008. Sean was elected to the Organisation of International Scenographers Theatre Architects and Technicians executive committee in 2013. He has been a member of the Linbury Prize advisory committee since 2002. In 2007, Sean was Project Leader and Co-Designer for the Prague Quadrennial Scenofest – an international festival of design and performance and in 2013, as the Project Leader for World Stage Design 2013 he helped bring 13,000 exhibitors, practitioners, and visitors to Cardiff. He is both educator and practitioner, allowing both pursuits to inform his practice in each area. His ultimate aspiration is to develop future generations of performance practitioners with a flexibility in their philosophy, a positive approach to problem resolution and an advanced skill set.
He is an honorary Fellow of RWCMD, received an honorary doctorate from Swansea University in 2016 and has won the Inspire Wales Arts and Culture Award.
He was the exhibition manager at the Victoria and Albert Museum for the Make Space and Staging Places exhibitions for the Society of British Theatre Designers in 2015 and 2019 and was a Curatorial Panel Member for Design for Performance at World Stage Design 2017 in Taipei. He is a Juror for World Stage Design 2022 in Calgary.
Sean was the Project leader for World Stage Design, a ten-day festival of performance design.
