Patrick Connellan is a freelance Set and Costume Designer based in Wales. Designing for all forms of live theatre and performance he has worked throughout the UK and internationally, including at The Birmingham Rep, RSC, Gielgud Theatre; National Theatre; Theatre Royal Northampton; Liverpool Everyman; New Vic Stoke; Hull Truck Theatre; Coventry Belgrade; West Yorkshire Playhouse; Derby Theatre/Playhouse; New Wolsey; Bolton Octagon; Holland Park Theatre, and recently Perm in Russia.
As a visiting lecturer to the College, Patrick teaches Design for Performance to BA and MA students and provides masterclasses in Theatre Design Practice.
His particular interest lies in documentary or verbatim theatre, combining this with puppetry in recent years. As Artistic Director he founded the theatre company Truth is Stranger than Fiction to promote work in this medium. Alongside his design practice Patrick also works as a Director, with his production of Popcorn at the Octagon Theatre in Bolton, which has subsequently gone on to win a Manchester Evening News Award.
Patrick has previously won the Linbury Prize for Stage Design and was a member of the team that won a Prague Quadrennial Gold Medal. He has exhibited widely at Society of British Theatre Design national exhibitions and has held positions as Head of Design at Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre, and as Course leader of the BA (Hons) Theatre Design course at Nottingham Trent University. He is currently an assessor for the Birkbeck MFA Theatre Directing course, and an external examiner for the MA in Performance Design and Practice at Central Saint Martins.
