Julia Plaut has performed and recorded with many of Britain’s finest early music ensembles including The Academy of Ancient Music, English Baroque Soloists and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Touring extensively in Europe, the U.S and Japan, Julia has given performances at Carnegie Hall, The Lincoln Centre, Musikverein Vienna, Concertgebouw Amsterdam and La Scala Milan.
As Principal Bassoon of the Hanover Band, Julia appeared as concerto soloist and on BBC Radio 3 from the Edinburgh Festival as soloist in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante. She recorded the Band’s complete Haydn Symphonies project. The Independent reviewed one of Julia’s BBC Prom’s performance thus ‘characterful woodwind, graced with a particularly persuasive bassoon.’
On modern bassoon, Julia has freelanced with BBC Symphony, BBC NOW and BBC Scottish Orchestras among others.
Julia is an enthusiastic educator working in various spheres from professional bassoon players to Kodaly based children’s work.
As Artistic Director of children’s music charity, Little Live Projects, Julia enjoys curating concerts and opportunities for young families to interact creatively with new music and musicians. Julia trains and mentors RWCMD students in working expertly with children aged 0 -11 years.
As a composer, Julia writes for voices; including chamber opera, choral, Lied and songs for children, as well as large and small-scale instrumental works. Her music has been performed at Wales Millennium Centre, St David’s Hall, RWCMD, Leeds Lieder Festival, The Guard’s Chapel London, and Llandaff Cathedral.
Julia was honored to conduct the premiere of her composition 24 PIANOS commissioned by the RWCMD to celebrate the arrival of 24 new Steinway pianos at the college in 2020.
